Biography: Lord Roke and his associates Lady Salmakia and Chevalier Tialys are Gallivespian spies who left their world when they heard of Lord Asriel’s rebellion and became outlaws. They are now employed by Lord Asriel in order to infiltrate the Magisterium and gather information to aid his battle plan.

The Gallivespians are a proud and touchy race, but make excellent spies because of their strikingly small size – they stand no taller than a hand-span. They usually ride giant dragonflies in order to travel at speed, but as denotes his higher rank, Lord Roke’s mount is an elegant blue hawk.

Lord Roke spends much of his time in Lord Asriel’s Adamant Tower supervising the actions of Tialys and Salmakia by means of the Lodestone Resonator, but it is when he is directed by Asriel to follow Mrs. Coulter after she steals the Intention Craft that he makes his greatest contribution to Lyra’s cause. He follows Coulter to Geneva where they discover the President of the Consistorial Court of Discipline’s plan to kill Lyra using a lock of her hair placed in the resonating chamber of their trans-universe bomb. Lord Roke sells his life dearly to save Mrs. Coulter and Lyra, and foil the Magisterium’s plans when he falls to his death over the drenched generating station at [[Saint-Jean-les-Eaux[[. Lord Roke is a brave and heroic character who becomes very committed to Lord Asriel’s cause and finally shows his dedication by paying the ultimate price.
