A charismatic woman and member of a leading gyptian family. Her dæmon changes during the first book. When she is worried about Billy it is a hawk. After Tony rescues Lyra in London it is a grey wolf like dog. She is the head of the Costa family, which includes her sons Tony Costa and Billy Costa. She was the nurse Lord Asriel hired to nurse Lyra when Lyra was a baby. She hid with Lyra when Edward Coulter burst in. After Lord Asriel's trial, she offered to care for Lyra, and when Lord Asriel took Lyra to Jordan Ma Costa continued to check up on her and to report to John Faa. Her son Billy is kidnapped by the Gobblers.
