A former nun and member of the Dark Matter Research Unit, who with her colleague Dr. Oliver Payne, has discovered the existence of shadows using "the Cave", a scientific computer. Through her communication with the shadows, she realizes that it is her destiny to "play the serpent." She helps Lyra, refuses to assist Sir Charles Latrom, destroys her equipment, travels through the window into Cittàgazze and then into the Mulefa World, where she befriends the Mulefa who think she is destined to help the dying seedpod trees(trees that grow large smooth wheel-like balls that the mulefa use as wheels to get around in their world), To help the mulefa she constructs the Amber Spyglass,which allows her to view Dust, and initiates the salvation of the universe by telling stories of marzipan and going to China to Lyra and Will.
