In our world, the span of the Middle Ages is variously designated but covers a broad expanse of time, beginning in some histories as early as the fall of the Roman Empire in the 5th century and extending through the early 16th century arrival of the Renaissance in Northern Europe.

Notes: The phrase Middle Ages is used consistently in The Golden Compass, while Middle Age is used once in Northern Lights; both the US and UK The Amber Spyglass use Middle Age.
