Muscovy

The equivalent of the Soviet Union, or Russia, in Lyra's world, but with the power and money of the United States of America. The soldiers from Muscovy (Muscovite Soldiers) are known as the fiercest warriors in Lyra's world and feature a number of times throughout the Trilogy. It was they who served Mrs. Coulter towards the end of Northern Lights and it was they who killed Lee Scoresby. They were also some of the first humans to side with Metatron. The army's total number exceeds one hundred thousand.

The relationship between Muscovy and the Tartars is unclear, ethnically and socially, and in terms of territorial control.

Muscovy was also the name for Russia in the western countries from the 14th to the 17th century.
