Naphtha, while being a perfectly flammable substance, is not used in lamps due to it's consistency and noxious odour (naptha is a key ingredient in the production of bitumen for road surfacing, and we all know how bad THAT smells!). Naphtha in His Dark Materials is not the naphtha that we know and... dislike, rather, it is the name given to parrafin in Lyra's world. An "naphtha lamp provides light by burning a wick in naphtha. It's opposed to the newer Anbaric Lights.
