New Line Cinema, founded over 40 years ago and most famous for the Lord of the Rings trilogy, the Austin Powers series, the Nightmare on Elm St, and, more recently, Snakes on a Plane, is co-chaired by Robert K Shaye and Michael Lynne. It is a subsidiary of Time Warner, and is the longest standing and most successful independant film company to date. Between 2003-2004, the company was given the go-ahead to produce three films that would follow the story of His Dark Materials. In 2007, New Line released "The Golden Compass".
