Other worlds

In the context of His Dark Materials, Other worlds are considered to be parallel worlds in parallel universes which exist in the Multiverse.
In Fantasy and Science Fiction literature, the use of Other worlds enables an author to explore familiar human situations in unfamiliar environments. Depending on the requirements of the narrative, the other world might differ only slightly, allowing the reader to empathise with the characters and their predicaments fairly easily. Other worlds that are bizarre and totally unfamiliar require greater imagination and can be used to examine how characters react in extreme situations.
