Pantalaimon, nicknamed Pan, is the dæmon of Lyra. First is presented to the reader in the form of a moth, he is unsettled until the end of The Amber Spyglass, when he is touched by Will's hand and turns into a red-gold pine marten. His name is that of a saint in the Orthodox churches, St. Panteleimon. "Panta" means "all" in Greek, and "eleimon" means "forgiveness" in Greek, thus Pantalaimon means "all forgiving" - an insight into his actions in the latter stages of the amber spyglass.
Pantalaimon has been known to change into a Wildcat, Ermine, Mouse, Leopard, various forms of Bird, and once, a Dragon.
