Queen of a witch clan in the region of Lake Enara. In Pullmans' book, witches live for hundreds of years, and Serafina is 300 years old, so she is considered young. She fell in love with Farder Coram, and owes him a debt for saving her life from another witch's daemon, and also bore his child, who died in childhood. Her dæmon is a snow goose named Kaisa.Kaisa gives the Gyptians and Lyra all the essential information about Bolvangar. In NL/TGC, Kaisa helps her release the caged dæmons from Bolvangar. She also helps pull Lee Scoresby's balloon from Bolvangar to Svalbard.She does much to aid Lyra in achieving her destiny. In TSK, she performs a mercy killing of a witch , who is being tortured by Mrs. Coulter on a boat, playing the role of Yambe-Akka, the witch goddess of death. Then she gathers a group of witches to travel into the world of Cittàgazze. Most of the witches are killed by spectres, but she survives. In TAS, she befriends and helps Mary Malone. Eva Green is playing her in the movie. Serafina is brave and loyal to Lyra and Lee Scoresby etc. She is also a skilled and fearless warrior. She is excellent at archery (as all witches are) from the air. She saves Lyra close from death in the Golden Compass movie, from a Tartar. Serafina Pekkala is very close to nature,as she flies she enjoys the star-tingle and the music of the Aurora.

- Philip Pullman stated he chose her name by looking through a Finnish phone book to assure the name was proper in origin, although later said in a speech he found it whilst looking through a list of politicians.Philip Pullman created her name by combinig two others.
