Ragnar Sturlusson is the pompous panserbjørne king of Svalbard in the Golden Compass film. In the HDM books Ragnar was called Iofur Raknison, but his name has been changed by New Line Cinema for the film adaption of The Golden Compass, presumably to avoid confusion with Iorek Byrnison.
The name Sturlusson reminds of Snorri Sturluson, an Icelandic politician, historian and poet. When the Norwegian king tried to incorporate Iceland into Norway, Sturluson first helped him. Later, he stood up for the independence of Iceland and was killed. Snorri is also famous for being the author of the Prose Edda, which consists of three books: A narrative of Norse mythology, a book of poetic language and a list of verse forms.
The suffix -son means son of so Ragnar is the son of Sturla.
