A kitchen boy around Lyra's age, is the youngest child of the Parslows employed as masons in Jordan College. During their life in Jordan, Roger was a close friend of Lyra Belacqua, often accompanying her on adventures around Oxford and inside Jordan College. These include climbing on rooftops, exploring the cellars, and even attempting to steal a boat which belongs to the Costas, a gyptian family.
Roger and his dæmon Salcilia, often in the form of a terrier, are more cautionary than Lyra, who earlier in the series, often even ignored her own dæmon Pan in instances of potential danger.
Lyra is the first to realize the mysterious disappearance of Roger one day and correctly conclude that he had indeed been kidnapped by the mysterious organization which has been stealing children from all over Brytain. The General Oblation Board ("Gobblers") took Roger to Bolvangar, an experimental station funded by the Church. Lyra goes to the North to rescue him and when she arrives, Roger helps her execute a plan to free all the children who are still alive. Roger's loyal nature again prompts him to accompany Lyra to Lord Asriel in Svalbard.
The next morning upon arrival, Roger and Lyra are betrayed by Lord Asriel who was determined to create an opening in the sky using the energy released by forcefully cutting Roger from his dæmon, killing him instantly from the shock. The hole lead to the city of Cittàgazze in another world. Lyra blamed herself for even allowing Roger to accompany her.
Eventually Lyra meets Roger again in the World of the Dead where she finally fulfills part of the prophecy and from which Roger is the first to be set free.
