Mrs. Coulter is one of the few female members of the Royal Arctic Institute, which limits its membership to those who are accomplished Arctic scholars or explorers.

The Institute's dining room is Lyra's favorite spot in London; she enjoys seeing famous explorers dining at nearby tables and examining artifacts from Arctic expeditions in the Institute's displays.
