Biography
Lee Scoresby is a New Dane from the country of Texas. He is a prospector, aëronaut and reluctant adventurer by profession.
Summary
He first meets Lyra in Trollesund where the Gyptians employ his services, mainly for the use of his hot air balloon. In Bolvangar he uses his balloon to help rescue Lyra and Roger from the General Oblation Board before crashing over Svalbard where Lord Asriel has been taken prisoner by the Panserbjørne.
Later, he searches for Stanislaus Grumman, who leads Lee on a journey to Cittàgazze in search of the Bearer of The Subtle Knife. Lee gives his life in a fight at Alamo Gulch at the hands of Magisterium controlled Muscovites to save Grumman, and later, when Lee’s good friend Iorek Byrnison finds his body, the great bear eats it as a sign of respect for his fallen comrade.
Even after his death, Lee continues to aid Lyra and Will. As a ghost he helps defend their dæmons from specters during the battle on the plain, before letting his atoms drift apart and float upwards to return to his beloved Hester.
Lee Scoresby is an honest and loyal person with a great sense of duty and honour. He is an old friend of the Panserbjørne king Iorek Byrnison, by whose side he fought at some point during the Tunguska Campaign. Also, through the course of the story he develops strong friendships with many of the characters, especially Lyra. Lee realises the important part she will play if she is to fulfill her destiny, and he does everything in his power to help her.
Despite his adventurous line of work, all Lee really wants is to retire peacefully with Hester and return to his homeland; he enjoys the simple things in life like a good cigar and a game of cards and as a result takes very little for granted.
Quotes: “Life is good and death is over.”
Lee: "I cain't shoot a man in the back!"
Hester: "Shame to die with one bullet left, though."
"Those poor men didn't have to come to this, and nor did we." -Last words
