Usage specific to His Dark Materials

A personal dæmon is said to settle in its final form when it ceases to change, or shape-shift; in other words, is no longer unsettled. As unsettled behaviour is characteristic of the dæmons of children, and settled that of adults, the act of settling can be viewed as marking the transition from childhood into adulthood: puberty or adolescence.
