A Finnish word meaning "multicolored", and the name of Will's dæmon, a cat, whose fur is a million different subtle colours.
As Will is from our world, Kirjava first was inside his body. She was torn out when he and Lyra entered the Land of the Dead, left behind with Pantalaimon. The two dæmons leave the World of the Dead and travel around, jumping through every window they find. During that travels without their human beings, the two dæmons learn many things. They visit the world the Gallivespians are from, for example, and learn about spectres, Dust and about the Subtle Knife. In the Battle on the Plain, the two dæmons and Lyra and Will meet again. She is then known to Will, Serafina Pekkala naming her "Kirjava", Finnish for "multi-colored".Kirjava's settled form is a magnificient cat, that is a cat of no ordinary size, and her fur was lustrous and rich,with a thousand different glints and shdes of ink-black, shadow-grey,the blue of a deep lake under a noon sky, mist-lavender-moonlight-fog...to see the meanning of subtlety,you had only to look at her fur. Even before Kirjava was revealed, Lyra was sure that Will had a daemon.
