Star Wars was the name given to the top-secret projects held primarily by the United States and, to a lesser extent, the Sovietunion in the mid-eighties and early nineties. The plans were to mount a system of Type 1 LASERs upon satellites, in order to defend either country against a possible ICBM (Inter-Continental Ballistic Missile) attack. However, an agreement was reached that forbade any militarization of space, and so the projects were both abandoned.
