Before you enter the Land of the Dead, you and your Death have to wait in a little village of another subsection of the World of the Dead. This world is horrible, created only to take in charge the waiting dead people, and also those living people who have accidentally wandered in. When ordinary living humans have come to the World of the Dead before their time, they are sent to wait in the Suburbs of the Dead, a limbo of sorts where they will remain until they have properly "passed on." In order to reach the Land of the Dead, one must be ferried across a body of water by the boatman.

This part of the story, like many others, refers to the Greek mythology: the dead wait until they are transferred to the underworld by the boatman, Charon. As soon as the dead board the boat that will carry them across the River Styx to Hades they have to leave their soul (dæmon) behind.
