Introduction

One of the Three Tools: it allows the bearer to see Dust through the photo-chemical reaction on Dust of the saplings' juice of the seed pods from the Mulefa World and two sheets of amber sap. The reaction seems to be similar to the one that allowed Lord Asriel to take photograms of the city behind the aurora. This is the only Tool that has been crafted by its final bearer, Dr. Mary Malone.

In His Dark Materials

Dr. Mary Malone made and used this instrument to discover Dust for the first time- she noticed the recurring trend as it drifted out, instead of swirling around in random patterns. Through this scientific idea, Mary came to find out about Dust, called sraf in the Mulefa world.
