General Oblation Board, The

A semi-private organization run by an enemy of Lord Asriel's. The General Oblation Board is not entirely answerable to the Church's Consistorial Court of Discipline, but instead appears to operate outside normal constraints, and has gained tremendous power. Their apparent goal is to destroy dust, which they believe is sin. They operate under Mrs. Coulter, who enchants kids by her beauty, kindness, wisdom, and seemingly angelic features. She lures them to her flat or some other private buildings where she gives them food and hospitatility, and then she sends them to Bolvangar, allowing the kids to write letters to their parents. The kids, being entranced by her kindness fall right into the trap, and the letters they write are thrown into the furnace. Some funding for the General Oblation Board is received from the Magisterium.

The General Oblation Board is known as the Gobblers to the street children of Lyra's World.
