Three Tools

The Three Tools are the Alethiometer, the Subtle Knife, and the Amber Spyglass. They all relate to Dust, and they all are borne by a major character in His Dark Materials - the Alethiometer by Lyra, the Knife by Will, and the Spyglass by Mary.
The three books of the trilogy (in the American version) would appear to be named after the Three Tools, although the title "The Golden Compass" did not originally refer to the Alethiometer. Nevertheless, the similarity was the rationale for making it the title of the first book.
