Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil

A tree that, according to the Book of Genesis, God had planted in the middle of the Garden of Eden along with the Tree of Life. In chapter three of Genesis the serpent, who is considered to be an incarnation of Satan, tempts Adam and Eve to eat of the Tree of Knowledge saying that they would become like Gods knowing Good and Evil. Adam and Eve succumb to the temptation even though God had forbidden them to eat from the Tree and had said that they would die if they did so. When God finds out that Adam and Eve have disobeyed him he banishes them from the Garden. This is known as the Fall of Mankind. Adam and Eve disobeying God is considered to be the Original Sin that all of humanity is marked with. The Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil and the story of the Fall can be seen as a symbol of the conflict between innocence and experience, which is one of the major themes in His Dark Materials.
