An old Tartar dog-sledge driver who takes Lee to the Muscovite Academy Observatory when Lee is looking for Stanislaus Grumman. He also explaines to Lee that the opening between the worlds happened before, thousands of generations ago, and that his people remember it. Umaq is probably referring to the first war in the Kingdom of Heaven, which probably had similar effects on the worlds.
