The Vatican City in our world is an independent state in Rome where the Pope lives and works, the last remnant of the once large Papal States.

The Vatican in Lyra's world has not had any great importance since pope John Calvin moved the Papacy to Geneva. After his death the office of Pope was abolished and a conciliar system was instituted. It is not clear whether the Magisterium still directly controls the land that is currently occupied by the Vatican, or indeed what the religious-political situation is in Italy at all.
