Also referred to as the Virgin Mary. She is considered to be the mother of Jesus Christ. According to the Christian doctrine Mary was still a virgin when she became pregnant with Jesus and she was impregnated by the Holy Spirit, which would make Jesus the son of God. Virgin birth is sometimes confused with immaculate conception which refers to the birth of Mary herself. Roman Catholics believe that at the time of her conception Mary was preserved from the mark of the Original Sin. It is also believed by many Christians that Mary remained a virgin even after she gave birth to Jesus even though the New Testament mentions several brothers and sisters of Jesus. The supporters of the doctrine of perpetual virginity believe that those parts of the Bible are referring to Jesus' cousins.
