Introduction

Witches are extremely long-lived beings, capable of producing children with men. All witches are female (this is proved wrong in the Amber Spyglass)- male children of witches are ordinary men and female children of witches become witches.

Characteristics

Witches do not mind the cold, and are primarily found in the far North, around the North and East edges of the Baltic Sea and in Lapland. Witches wear thin silk clothes and fly on Cloud-Pine branches. Witch dæmons can move as far away from the witch as they want, a feat which distinguishes them from normal humans. Young witches undergo a rite of passage whereby they pass over a wasted plain where no dæmon can go, thereby stretching, so to speak, the bond between human and dæmon and allowing far travel. The process is, however, very physically and emotionally painful. Also, all witches' daemons take the form of a bird.

Organization

Witches live in clans, each of which controls a small area and is ruled by a queen. There are highly complicated alliances and emnities between the clans. Some are allied with the Church, and some are not.
