World

A World is the complete environment, both physical and abstract, in which an individual, or group of individuals, lives out their life. World is not necessarily synonymous with planet or the Earth. It might be very restricted: as in the World of an earthworm; or the World experienced by someone in a coma. The World of Mankind can now be thought of as including the surface of the Moon, parts of space probed with space-craft and telescopes, the imaginary worlds of literature, and cyberspace. The Universe contains a vast number of planets, some of which might be Worlds for other life forms.
In literature, philosophy, and some scientific theories, alternative parallel universes exist in which there are parallel Worlds to our own. If an individual, such as Lyra in His Dark Materials, is able to visit more than one parallel World, then their own personal "World" is expanded to include other parts of the Multiverse.
